Breathwork

Breathwork is a potent tool for self-discovery and healing, guiding us to our inner state of presence and engagement. By practicing breathwork, we connect with the present, shedding the weight of past and future. This deepens our awareness, unlocking inner wisdom and intuition. Focusing on the breath releases tension and stress, creating mental and physical ease. It helps us release outdated stories and beliefs, fostering self-understanding, strength, and resilience on our journey.

Some doors only open from the inside. Breath is a way of accessing that door .

“Breathwork” is a broad term that is used to describe processes in which various forms of breath are used as a conscious tool to help us manifest transformation in our lives. It is a physical, emotional and spiritual journey that has the capacity to provide expanded awareness, deep clarity and release.

Breathwork ultimately consists of four components. The breath is:

Conscious. Connected. Circular. Continuous

Which breathwork process  we do will always be dependent on the client and/or the group and what they need.

What Breathwork is:

  • A trauma release tool

  • A healing modality

  • A meditative state

  • An integrative experience

  • A method of attaining clarity and expanded state of awareness

  • A path to connect with Self, Higher Self, and Hashem

  • And more…

What Breathwork is not:

  • Yoga

  • Gentle meditation

  • A “class” where you will be lectured to and taught techniques

Breathwork can be an intense experience, a very active process. You’ll want to wear something comfortable! The intensity can hit many different levels but it's well worth the powerful positive multi-level results! Incredibly well worth it!

Why would anyone want to do this?

To understand this, we need to get into a little bit of science.

We all know that the body is fueled with oxygen. We need air to survive the same way we need food and water. Fortunately or unfortunately we spend an amazing amount of time, effort and energy on our eating and drinking habits, while we may neglect our breathing habits. If oxygen is our main source of fuel oxygen we can understand that our entire physical emotional mental systems operate on oxygen as well.

Did you know that it takes more oxygen to burn fat than to store it? That’s why aerobic exercise burns calories- anaerobic builds muscle. It’s not the exercise that’s burning the fat as much as it’s the influx of oxygen you take in when you get your heart rate up. Does this mean you can lose weight without exercise? Yes! Think about breathing away the pounds! ;)

Emotions need oxygen too! The vast emotional range that we have can be regulated because emotional processing needs oxygen too. So what do you suppose happens when we dont breathe through our emotions? Or our frustrations do not receive oxygen? Trauma processing needs oxygen too, even joy and happiness!

Have you ever held back your sadness? Have you ever held your breath in fear or anticipation? I know I did!

When we hold our breaths, we dont give space or breath to what is really going on underneath and we force it down or stuff it down without cycling through to a release. Our minds may forget about the feelings but our bodies never do. That’s why breathwork is instrumental in moving emotional stuckness.

Breath is energy and energy can be very powerful, it can also be quite destructive when it is not allowed to move. Imagine holding the breath of someone who is scared or wants to cry, what happens to those emotions? Unexpressed energy affects us on a cellular level, suppressing our feelings, our sensations and even our immune systems. Breathwork is a natural, G-d given way to help us release heal and calibrate all that.

But I’m already breathing?! Let me just do it on my own!

You’re right, and there is a specific targeted value in working with a breathwork facilitator. There is no one “right” way to do Breathwork and each breathworker is unique to their own craft and are trained facilitators who have may spent years developing a relationship with Breath and its healing properties. A skilled facilitator will guide you to the breath practice and experience that is optimally suited for what you desire to acquire from your session. Some breathwork facilitators will give you a take-home exercise that could be implemented to a personal breath practice. It is important to mention that unless specifically trained or instructed by a facilitator, participants should not try doing Breathwork on their own.

Breathwork can be used as a process designed to go deep into the psyche and bring up old emotional wounds that are ready to heal. In the process of Breathwork, participants may find themselves flashing through old memories, various emotions, and physical responses. These responses are what facilitators are trained to help with. A Breath Facilitator will guide you through stuck emotions, limiting beliefs, old stories and trauma patterns, to help you move and release the energy- making room for the joy and peace that always lie underneath.

So what happens?

Because breathwork is a physical emotional mental process it can affect these 3 realms. During the process participants may experience some physiological responses such as:

Tingling, Dizziness. Numbness, Tetany (a clenching of the extremities such as fingers, toes, and face), Sweating, Cold, Nausea/need to purge, Trembling, Shivering

Some emotional responses may be:

Crying, Laughing, An urge to move, jump, dance, or sway, A disconnect from Self, Anger or frustration.

Some mental responses may be:

Rumination, Old patterns of thinking, Memories of childhood, Mental clarity and sharpness

Each and every response is normal and safe and welcome. A seasoned breathwork facilitator has been trained to hold space for whatever comes up. At the end of Breathwork sessions, you can expect to feel a sense of calm, release, ease and lightness. There is time after a breathwork session to share and integrate. While optional, expressions and sharing can be beneficial to process the experience.

Some things to know.

  • Yes, and since it can be intense there is helpful information that the facilitator will ask to know such as if you are:

    • Pregnant

    • Have any diagnosed medical condition

    • Have any diagnosed mental health condition

    • Are on any medications,

    • Are a trauma or abuse survivor

Being made aware of the above conditions and will help the facilitator ensure you have a safe session that is most suited for your situation.

  • Well that depends on whether this is a private or a group session, but in general you can expect about an hour’s worth of breathing with the lights closed and specially chosen music to help get you into the state.

    • A Yoga mat

    • A water bottle- This is important!

    • Some tissues

    • You might want to bring a cloth or an eye mask to use as a blindfold. (It helps people who want a more internal experience)

  • You want to wear loose comfortable clothing that you can move, sweat, and breathe in. Consider gym clothes. For women, slinky/loose skirts, snood/scarf. You definitely want to wear leggings underneath skirts as we can get quite active.

  • Prepare an intention. Think of something you want more clarity on in your life. Something that is going on for you that you’re having some difficulty with and would like to resolve.

    • You have read the above and understand it fully

    • Don't do Breathwork on your own unless directed and approved by a facilitator

    • Take responsibility for your own process and outcomes

    • You have been honest and upfront with facilitators about any conditions we may need to be made aware of

Breathwork is such a broad and exciting field and subject you’ve read the basics to help get you started.

Many kinds of breathwork exist today each consisting of its own unique methods of using breath for healing purposes. Drawing from Eastern practices while incorporating Western psychotherapy techniques, breathwork brings about  states of self-awareness, equilibrium, catharsis, and peace.

Some quick studies on the positive effects:

  • In 1994, Spivak et al. concluded that the alteration of consciousness that occurs during Holotropic Breathwork incites not only phenomenal influence but also physiological effects.

  • In 1996, a study conducted by Sarah Holmes et al. found that participants who received Holotropic Breathwork experienced a reduction in “death anxiety” and an increase in self-esteem.

  • A study conducted by Binovera (2003) found that Holotropic Breathwork participants reported better communication with others and a deeper understanding of the world around them.

Disclaimer:

  • Breathwork is not recommended for people with a history of aneurisms, cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure, vision problems, osteoporosis, or any recent physical injuries or surgeries. It is also not recommended for people who experience severe psychiatric symptoms, seizures or who take heavy medication.

Is your work suitable for everyone, or are there specific prerequisites or limitations?

Generally I want to be working with a client that has had some preliminary work in emotional intelligence and awareness or therapy is helpful. Clients with a mental health diagnoses are only accepted for sessions on a case by case basis.

How long is a typical Hineini Breathwork session, and what can I expect during a session?

Typical sessions are 90 minutes and can include anything from coaching, hypnotherapy, family constealltion work, and breathwork. It is best to have an intention before your session to zero in on a GPS.

Are sessions conducted in person, virtually, or both?

While there is nothing quite like an in person session, I have worked with clients internationally quite successfully BH.

Is prior experience in breathwork or meditation necessary to participate in a session?

Not necessary though it is recommended.

What measures are in place to ensure a safe and comfortable environment during Hineini sessions?

Safety is both the responsibility of the client and the facilitator, the sessions are focused with presence and compassion and there is authenticity, transparency and honesty when the subject matter is beyond the expertise of the practitioner.

How often do you recommend attending sessions to experience the best results?

This depends on the client and what they are looking to achieve.

Can Breathwork be integrated with other therapeutic or spiritual practices I am already engaged in?

Very much so, breathwork is an outstanding complementary process to further integrate work that happens outside of the individual session.

What should I do to prepare for a session, and is there anything I should avoid before or after the session?

Some time to reflect and collect your thoughts would be ideal. Having an intention or idea of a direction would be extremely helpful. Eating 30-45 minutes before a session might hinder the process. Allow some time after the session to integrate and regulate.

How do I schedule a private Hineini session with Moe Srour, and what is the cost of the sessions? Is there a sliding scale?

You can contact Moe here or send him a text or whatsapp to explore further. Sessions are priced where they are priced and there is no sliding scale.

What if I want to attend a breathwork group?
